It's getting to be the gift giving season, and does it really matter whether that's a gift for yourself or a gift for someone else? It is our position that it does not. [Update: Decryption working] TWRP now supports Pixel 2 and 2 XL in alpha, plus Moto G5 and more in stable

These days, TWRP is virtually the only custom recovery for Android devices on the market, so it's a relief that it's actually good. It also covers an incredibly large amount of devices, with more constantly being added. This time around, alpha versions have come on the scene for Google's two new smartphones, as well as stable versions for a few others.

Verizon has rolled out some new exclusive devices today, and they won't cost you an arm and a leg. More like a finger—maybe just the tip of one. The Asus ZenFone V Live is available today for $168 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab E launches for $249.99.

YouTube 12.44 brings pinch-to-zoom to more devices like the Galaxy S8+ and LG V30

YouTube 12.40 brought one small but neat change: a pinch-to-zoom gesture that lets you expand the video to fit an entire 18:9 display. Since most videos are made for the 16:9 format, black bars would sit on each side of the display when you're viewing YouTube videos in fullscreen mode, which sort of detracted from the illusion of having that big shiny nearly full-front display.

With 12.40, only the Pixel 2 supported the gesture, leaving other 18:9 smartphones behind. Now we've verified that v12.44 of the YouTube app makes the gesture available to the Galaxy S8+, LG V30, and possibly more devices.

Verizon Galaxy J3 and Sprint Galaxy J7 Perx get updated to Android Nougat

Forget that rounded black biscuit sandwich filled with cream and let's talk about the chewy sweet made of egg whites and nuts instead. (Said no one, ever.) But seriously, let's just pretend Oreo doesn't exist and focus on Nougat. It was a great Android OS with multi-window, bundled notifications, quick replies, and plenty of other great improvements.

Now you'll be able to enjoy those same features if you own a Galaxy J3 on Verizon or a Galaxy J7 Perx on Sprint. Both devices have started receiving a software update to Nougat. The J3 jumps to build number NMF26X.J320VVRU2BQJ1, whereas the J7 Perx goes up to J700PVPE2BQJ2.

At the beginning of the month, Samsung started rolling out its Android 8.0 Oreo beta to its Galaxy S8/S8 Plus devices in the US, UK, and Korea. SmartThings app adds Scenes, fingerprint authentication, visitor lock codes, and more

One of the most requested features in the SmartThings app has been scene support. I'm new to the system, so I'm sure there were some enterprising solutions to the lack of scenes, but there wasn't any native and easy way to do it. That changes with the latest update to version 2.10 of the SmartThings app.

Scenes reside inside the My Home tab, next to Things and Rooms, and allow you to change multiple lights, switches, and devices to different presets to suit a certain mood. So if you're working, you can have the lights go all the way up but if you're watching a movie, they can be dimmed down.
